Douglas County is the high ground south of the metro: Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree, Parker, Castle Pines and Castle Rock. Its homes are mostly recent, its drives are often steep or curving, and it sits higher than Denver, which trims both ends of the sealing season. Castle Rock, the county seat, takes its name from the butte in the middle of town and sits at roughly 6,200 feet, about a thousand feet above downtown Denver.
That height and that terrain shape the work. Higher ground is cooler, so the evenings that decide whether a coat cures properly arrive sooner in autumn and later in spring than they do in the city. Rolling land means sloped and curving drives, and on a slope the runoff from the lot above follows the asphalt downhill, cutting along edges and into any crack it meets.
